The Origin of Triple Wisdom Hall

In June 1959, after the completion of the construction of Chuk Yuan Vihara【竺園精舍】, which was prepared and built by Wang Long Shu and other disciples, the founding monk of our hall, late Ven. Chuk Mor, moved from the Bodhi College, where he had been residing for five years, to Chuk Yuan Vihara. As time went by, the number of devoted followers who came to take refuges and to learn Dharma grew, and Chuk Yuan Vihara became insufficient to accommodate them.

Therefore, in 1962, at the request of the disciples, he initiated the construction of the Triple Wisdom Hall. The reason for the construction of the hall was, according to the late Ven. Chuk Mor: “[If] the truth does not flourish, the world would be in turmoil, and delusional karma would cause frequent disasters. [Therefore,] for the purification of life, we must promote Buddhism.”

In 1964, the former building of the U. S. Consulate at No. 5, Pangkor Road was found, which could be converted into a Buddhist temple. In March 1965, late Ven. Chuk Mor moved from Chuk Yuan Vihara to Triple Wisdom Hall. Triple Wisdom Hall takes the meaning of Three Wisdom: “listening, contemplating, and practicing” as its primary objective. It means that by listening to the Dharma, contemplating the Dharma, and practicing the Dharma, all people will be able to change from delusion to awakening, and to cut off confusion and realize the truth.

On April 8, 1966, Triple Wisdom Hall was officially opened, a few points of the opening speech by the late Ven. Chuk Mor was to the following effect:

First, although there are many temples in both Singapore and Malaysia, there is no [Buddhist] lecture hall yet, so I came to try to organize one.

Second, there are more and more followers from various places, so we need to have a larger temple in order to be able to accept them.

Third, there are many believers, but those who understand the truth are few, so the propagation of Buddhist teaching is extremely necessary today.

Fourth, our hall intends to set up groups for research, teaching, education, culture, charity, meditation, chanting, and scholarship. We will gradually promote them as appropriate.

Inheriting the spirit of late Ven. Chuk Mor in propagating Buddhist teaching, our hall will make the Dharma connections and share the benefits of Dharma with everyone through the convenience of the internet.
